<p>The unit was formed as the 64th Troop Carrier Wing with TAC at Donaldson AFB, SC in July 1952, operating the C-82, and was inactivated two years later. It was reactivated at Dyess AFB in February 1961 with the C-130A/D, but inactivated in January 1963 when replaced by 516th TCW. The wing was reactivated at Sewart AFB, TN in July 1966 with the C-130E and redesignated 64th Tactical Airlift Wing in May 1967 before moving to Little Rock AFB in March 1970. After being inactivated in May 1971, the unit transferred to ATC and was redesignated the 64th Flying Training Wing with activation at Reese AFB in October 1972, replacing the 3500th PTW. The wing was the first operational unit to receive the T-1A Jayhawk.
